An integrated, comprehensive, multicomponent approach to crisis intervention in a variety of individuals, groups and settings. Prerequisite: PSYC 101 or HLTH 101.

NURS 594 TRAVEL STUDY IN NURSING (3)

Historical and contemporary sociopolitical factors that guide the delivery of health care to various population groups in other countries. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor.

NURS 600 ADVANCED CLINICAL PRACTICE (3)

Advanced Clinical Practice examines the advanced pathophysiology, physical assessment and pharmacological treatments for clients with or at risk for common health alterations. Prerequisite: graduate nursing student status or consent of department.

NURS 601 THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS OF NURSING PRACTICE (3)

Prepares nurses to critically analyze and apply a wide range of nursing and related theories to research and clinical practice in order to develop a comprehensive and holistic approach to care. Prerequisite: consent of instructor.

NURS 602 BASIC CONCEPTS IN NURSING QUALITY AND SAFETY (3)

Introduction to preparing to practice as an advanced generalist nurse to basic concepts of professional nursing practice. The student will study various aspects of professional nursing with a focus on quality and safety in practice. Prerequisite: admission to master’s program.

NURS 603 NURSING RESEARCH (3)

Prepares the nurse to identify clinical problems, critically evaluate nursing research, develop a research design, and apply research in practice. Prerequisites: Undergraduate research and/or statistics course and consent of instructor.

NURS 604 HEALTH ASSESSMENT FOR THE ADVANCED GENERALIST NURSE (3)

Focuses on the acquisition of skills for physical and psychosocial assessment by the advanced generalist nurse in diverse settings across the lifespan. Prerequisite: admission to master’s program.

NURS 605 NURSING SYSTEMS IN HEALTH CARE (3)

Prepares the nurse to participate in the design, implementation and management of care in a variety of health care systems, provide quality cost-effective care, and assume a leadership role in the managing of human, fiscal, and physical health care resources. Prerequisite: consent of department.

NURS 606 ADVANCED PHARMACOLOGY FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE (2)

Examines pharmacological treatments for patients with or at risk for health alterations and the nurse’s role in providing high quality, safe pharmacologic care. Prerequisite: admission to master’s program.

NURS 607 ADVANCED PATHOPHYSIOLOGY (3)

Relates manifestations of disease, risk factors for disease, and the principles of pathology underlying illness to therapeutic nursing interventions and outcomes. Prerequisite: admission to master’s program.

NURS 608 THE SCIENCE OF FUNDAMENTAL NURSING CARE: A POPULATION-BASED PERSPECTIVE (3)

Focuses on the theoretical and conceptual knowledge base needed by the advanced generalist to provide foundational nursing care to adults. Corequisite: NURS 608C. Prerequisite: admission to master’s program.

NURS 608C THE PRACTICE OF FUNDAMENTAL NURSING CARE FOR THE ADVANCED GENERALIST NURSE [CLINICAL] (2)

The focus of this clinical experience is the application of theoretical and conceptual foundational nursing knowledge in the care of adult patients. Graded S/U. Corequisite: NURS 608.

NURS 610 CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT IN NURSING (3)

Overview of theory and methods for the development of nursing educational delivery systems in academic and service settings. Prerequisite: consent of department.

NURS 612 TEACHING AND LEARNING IN NURSING (3)

Focuses on the application of learning theory and teaching methods in the classroom and clinical environments with a particular emphasis on meeting the needs of diverse student populations. Includes instructional technology and micro-teaching experiences. Prerequisite: consent of department.

NURS 620 THE SCIENCE OF MENTAL HEALTH NURSING: A POPULATION-BASED PERSPECTIVE (3)

The study of the science of mental health nursing care for individuals and populations with a focus on theoretical concepts and evidence-based practice. There will be an emphasis on the biopsychosocial assessment and evidence-based nursing interventions with quality and safety as a priority when planning care for patients experiencing alterations in neuropsychiatric, psychological and social behaviors. Corequisite: NURS 620C. Prerequisites: completion of all first semester NURS-MS courses.

NURS 620C THE PRACTICE OF MENTAL HEALTH NURSING FOR THE ADVANCED GENERALIST NURSE [CLINICAL] (2)

The application of care of the patient in a variety of population-based community and inpatient psychiatric- mental health settings. There will be an emphasis on the assessment of mental health and mental illness in individuals, with quality and safety as a priority when caring for patients experiencing alterations in psychological and social behaviors. Graded S/U. Corequisite: NURS 620. Prerequisites: all first semester NURS-MS courses.

NURS 622 THE SCIENCE OF ADULT HEALTH NURSING: A POPULATION-BASED PERSPECTIVE (3)

Emphasizes the science of adult health nursing care for individuals and populations with a focus on theoretical concepts and evidence-based practice. Emphasis on the biopsychosocial assessment and evidence-based nursing interventions with quality and safety as a priority when planning care for adult and geriatric patients experiencing common health problems. Corequisite: NURS 622C. Prerequisites: completion of all first semester NURS-MS courses.

The application of advanced generalist nursing care to adult and geriatric patients in acute care settings. Graded S/U. Corequisite: NURS 622. Prerequisites: all first semester NURS-MS nursing courses.

NURS 625 BIOSTATISTICS FOR HEALTHCARE RESEARCH AND EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE (3)

Designed to provide the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to conduct statistical analyses of quantitative data. Prerequisites: all first semester NURS-MS courses and an undergraduate statistics or nursing research course.

NURS 626 ADVANCED CONCEPTS IN QUALITY AND SAFETY IN HEALTHCARE (3)

Prepares the advanced generalist nurse to function as an advocate for quality and safety in complex healthcare systems. Corequisites: all second semester NURS-MS courses. Prerequisites: successful completion of all first semester NURS-MS courses.

NURS 670 SPECIAL TOPICS IN NURSING (1-3)

An examination of current and evolving topics in nursing. The specific requirements and prerequisites will vary with each topic and will be designated by the by the department. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credits provided a different topic is covered. Prerequisites: will vary according to topic.

NURS 701 ADVANCED POPULATION BASED HEALTH (3)

Focuses on the application of advanced nursing clinical reasoning to population based health. Evidence based program planning and evaluation models are applied to diverse population groups with unmet health needs across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on the advanced clinical nursing care of vulnerable populations in diverse community based settings. Prerequisites: all graduate core and concentration courses with the exception of the elective course, NURS 802, NURS 713, IDHP 610 (applies to Clinician to Administrator students only) and NURS 810 (applies to Nursing Education students only); and consent of department.

NURS 702 THE SCIENCE OF NURSING CARE OF FAMILIES AND NEWBORNS: A POPULATION-BASED PERSPECTIVE (3)

Focuses on the theoretical and holistic application of advanced generalist nursing care of women and families. Corequisite: NURS 702C. Prerequisites: all first year courses in the NURS-MS program.

NURS 702C THE PRACTICE OF NURSING CARE OF FAMILIES AND NEWBORNS FOR THE ADVANCED GENERALIST NURSE [CLINICAL] (2)

Focuses on the role of the advanced generalist nurse as a provider of safe and equitable care in settings which deliver evidenced based nursing care to women and newborns. Pregnancy and childbirth are framed within a philosophy of wellness and normal physiological, psychological, and sociocultural adaptation. Graded S/U. Corequisite: NURS 702. Prerequisites: all NURS-MS first year fall and spring courses.

NURS 704 THE SCIENCE OF PEDIATRIC NURSING: A POPULATION-BASED PERSPECTIVE (3)

Focuses on the theoretical and holistic application of advanced generalist nursing care of the pediatric patient. Corequisite: NURS 704C. Prerequisites: all first fall and spring NURS-MS courses.

NURS 704C THE PRACTICE OF PEDIATRIC NURSING CARE FOR THE ADVANCED GENERALIST NURSE [CLINICAL] (2)

Focuses on the role of the advanced generalist nurse as provider of care for children who are experiencing alterations in health and their family. Graded S/U. Corequisite: NURS 704. Prerequisites: all first fall and spring NURS-MS courses.

NURS 712 THE ADULT LEARNER (3)

Introduction to learning in adulthood, including context, development, process and practice. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

NURS 713 EVALUATION IN NURSING EDUCATION (3)

Emphasis is placed on the evaluation of student performance, teaching, courses and programs. Assessment measures of learner outcomes, faculty effectiveness and program quality will be explored. Students who have successfully completed NURS 710 will not receive additional credit for NURS 713. Prerequisites: NURS 600, NURS 610, NURS 612 (may be taken concurrently); and consent of department.

Examines the role of the advanced generalist nurse in providing care to adult patients with acute and complex health care needs. Corequisite: NURS 716C. Prerequisites: all first fall, spring and summer NURS-MS courses.

NURS 716C THE PRACTICE OF COMPREHENSIVE ADULT NURSING FOR THE ADVANCED GENERALIST NURSE [CLINICAL] (2)

Develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the advanced generalist nurse to provide care to adult and geriatric patients with acute and complex health care needs. Graded S/U. Corequisite: NURS 716. Prerequisites: all first fall, spring and summer NURS-MS courses.

NURS 718 THE SCIENCE OF PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING: A POPULATION-BASED PERSPECTIVE (3)

Prepares the advanced generalist nurse to coordinate and provide culturally appropriate, population-based nursing care to families, aggregates, and communities. Emphasis is placed on accountability for safety, quality care, advocacy, social justice, and collaboration with diverse stakeholders. Corequisite: NURS 718C. Prerequisites: all first fall, spring and summer NURS-MS courses.

NURS 718C THE PRACTICE OF PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING FOR THE ADVANCED GENERALIST NURSE [CLINICAL] (2)

Focuses on the application of public and population health nursing theory to the care of families, aggregates, and communities with complex needs. Graded S/U. Corequisite: NURS 718. Prerequisites: all first fall, spring and summer NURS-MS courses.

NURS 720 NURSING RESEARCH FOR EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT (3)

Prepares the advanced generalist nurse to identify clinical problems, critically evaluate nursing research, develop a research proposal, and apply research to support quality and safety in nursing practice. Prerequisites: all first fall, spring and summer NURS-MS courses.

NURS 722 NURSING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT FOR THE ADVANCED GENERALIST NURSE (3)

Focuses on the leadership roles and management functions of the advanced generalist nurse as coordinator of care for populations across the life span in a variety of health care environments. Prerequisites: completion of all first, second, third and fourth semester NURS-MS courses.

NURS 723 PRACTICUM FOR THE ADVANCED GENERALIST NURSE (6)

In this course, the advanced generalist nurse will refine the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed for professional nursing practice. Graded S/U. Prerequisites: completion of all first, second, third and fourth semester NURS-MS courses.

NURS 724 HEALTH POLICY: IMPLICATIONS FOR POPULATION HEALTH AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT (3)

Prepares the advanced generalist nurse to assume a leadership role in health care policy, health care organizations, and financing. Prerequisites: completion of all first, second, third and fourth semester NURS-MS courses.

NURS 802 ADVANCED POPULATION BASED HEALTH PRACTICUM (3)

Students apply concepts and theories related to advanced population based health to diverse community practice settings where advanced nursing care is provided to vulnerable population groups. Students assume advanced nursing leadership roles in executing evidence based, scholarly, population-focused health projects to promote health among targeted populations. Prerequisites: all Graduate Core and Concentration Courses with the exception of the elective course, IDHP 610 (applies to Clinician to Administrator students only) and NURS 810 (applies to Nursing Education students only); and consent of department.

NURS 810 TEACHING PRACTICUM (3)

A practicum designed to apply new advanced nursing knowledge and skills in teaching and learning in academic or service settings. Self-assessment of teaching, discussion of the nurse educator role, and exploration of issues related to the teaching/learning environment will occur throughout the semester.in weekly seminars. Prerequisites: NURS 600, NURS 610, NURS 612, NURS 713 (may be taken concurrently); and consent of department.
