Current philosophies and objectives of music scope and sequence of music curricula (vocal and instrumental) in the schools. Prerequisite: Consent of program director.

MUED 610 INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC IN SPECIAL EDUCATION (3)

Curriculum materials and activities that address needs of students with disabilities; development and adaptation of lesson plans and individual education programs are emphasized. Prerequisite: consent of the department.

MUED 624 INTEGRATING LITERACY IN THE MUSIC CLASSROOM I (3)

Overview of process and acquisition of literacy, informal strategies for assessing literacy, and the range of instructional strategies and materials for integrating literacy into P-12 music education. Prerequisite: consent of the department.

MUED 625 INTEGRATING LITERACY IN THE MUSIC CLASSROOM II (3)

Strategies for teaching music content area reading and writing components, including literature, content area reference materials, and music performance, as ways to integrate literacy into upper elementary and secondary music education classrooms. Prerequisite: consent of the department.

MUED 626 CURRICULUM AND ASSESSMENT IN MUSIC EDUCATION (3)

Introduction to theories of curriculum design and their application in instructional practice in preK-12 school settings. Consideration of how different contexts and learner characteristics influence design and assessment. Prerequisite: consent of the department.

MUED 630 DALCROZE-ORFF KODALY FOR THE CLASSROOM I (2)

Principles of Dalcroze eurhythmics, Orff and Kodaly techniques in elementary and middle school programs. Appropriate for vocal-general and instrumental teachers. Prerequisite: Bachelor's degree in Music or Music Education.

MUED 631 DALCROZE ORFF KODALY FOR THE CLASSROOM II (2)

Principles of beginning and intermediate level Dalcroze, Orff and Kodaly techniques in the vocal-general and instrumental music program exploring practical techniques and materials using an eclectic approach to teaching concepts and skills. Prerequisite: MUED 630 or consent of instructor.

MUED 633 ORFF TECHNIQUES (2)

Methods and materials incorporating improvisation, orchestration, mallet technique, speech chants, movement and use of Orff instruments. Prerequisite: MUED 630 or consent of instructor.

MUED 661 SEMINAR IN INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC EDUCATION (3)

Comparative analysis of current methods and materials used in schools and colleges. Instrumental conducting and repertoire. Construction of acoustical properties and basic techniques of instruments. Includes study of error detection, ensemble balance, intonation, and interpretation. Materials and music literature for bands, orchestras, and small ensembles are evaluated. Prerequisite: consent of the department.

MUED 662 SEMINAR IN CHORAL AND GENERAL MUSIC EDUCATION (3)

Comparative analysis of current methods and materials used in choral and general music settings in preK-12 schools and higher education. Repertoire, style interpretation, tone quality, diction, rehearsal strategies, and conducting techniques are analyzed. Prerequisite: consent of the department.

MUED 663 INTEGRATING LITERACY AND MUSIC THROUGH CHILDREN’S PICTURE BOOKS (3)

Will provide guidance to early childhood and elementary caregivers and teachers in developing and integrating literacy components and music elements/concepts through children’s picture books. Fun and educational ideas for using children’s picture books for P-5 grades will be examined, researched, shared, and presented.

MUED 670 SPECIAL TOPICS IN MUSIC EDUCATION (1-3)

Selected topics in music education. Can be repeated for credit to a maximum of 15 units when topics differ. Prerequisite: graduate standing.

MUED 695 RESEARCH METHODS IN MUSIC EDUCATION (3)

The application of research to problems in the field of music education. Prerequisite: Admission to the graduate program in Music Education and consent of instructor.
