Admission Requirements

A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university**
-
GPA of 3.00 or 2.75 for conditional admission (last 60 undergraduate units)
- Statement of intent in Spanish (500 words), including previous preparation in Spanish (studies, degrees earned, lived experience, and work), interest in the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Spanish, and potential impact of the PBC on professional and personal goals. If the applicant has taken the placement test and permission is granted by the Graduate Director, the essay may be in English (500 words).

Student proficiency level will be determined via the placement exam and/or an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). Students who rate below Intermediate High, will begin the program with a prerequisite course within the certificate program.
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Professional Spanish accepts admission materials on a rolling basis, but priority deadlines are April 1 for Fall admission or November 1 for Spring admission. Submit admission materials to Graduate Admissions .
Non-immigrant International Students
Program Enrollment: F-1 and J-1 students are required to be enrolled full-time. The majority of their classes must be in-person and on campus. See the list of programs that satisfy these requirements, and contact the International Student and Scholars Office with questions.

Degree Requirements
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Professional Spanish requires completion of a 15-unit program of study, combining 3 units of required curriculum with 12 units of elective courses at the 600-level. Students must complete a 3-unit capstone course at the 600-level. Upon completion of the program, students will be given an official Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).

- Students will display language skills in Spanish at the Advanced Low level of oral proficiency (as minimally required by ACTFL to perform teaching responsibilities effectively in the target language) or above.
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of Hispanic cultures ranging from literature and the visual and performing arts to folklore and contemporary issues in the media, and the ability to write clearly and concisely in Spanish about such topics.
- Students will recognize the many factors that influence first and second language acquisition and provide evidence of contributing, expanding, evaluating or refining the information base within the field of language acquisition.
