Degree Requirements

The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Professional Spanish requires completion of a 15-unit program of study, combining 3 units of required curriculum with 12 units of elective courses at the 600-level. Students must complete a 3-unit capstone course at the 600-level. No more than one 500-level course can be counted toward the certificate. Upon completion of the program, students will be given an official Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).

  1. Students will display language skills in Spanish at the Advanced Low level of oral proficiency (as minimally required by ACTFL to perform teaching responsibilities effectively in the target language) or above.
  2. Students will demonstrate knowledge of Hispanic cultures ranging from literature and the visual and performing arts to folklore and contemporary issues in the media, and the ability to write clearly and concisely in Spanish about such topics.
  3. Students will show they can use Spanish to interact confidently in a variety of professional and academic settings, both orally and in writing.
