One of the top initiatives of Towson University is to provide outstanding support and services to all student veterans and qualified dependents.
 
The Military and Veterans Center (MVC) promotes a safe and like-minded community, personal growth and career development opportunities, and comprehensive in-school support. 

Community

The TU Military and Veterans Center provides a hub for study, camaraderie and comfort. Our center grants a place for student veterans and qualified dependents to read, work, use public computers and other resources, and enjoy the company of their like-minded peers.

Growth

TU student veterans continue to serve in many significant ways. They use their unique motivations and lessons learned from their time in the military to engage in social and charity programs, learn new workplace and career skills, and to transition successfully from college to their future careers.

Support

The MVC seeks to provide timely, 100 percent fulfillment of all GI Bill and related claims. The MVC also serves, through its expert staff, as a resource space that assists and guides its members through any challenge they might face at TU.

Veterans Benefits

First-Time Applying for Benefits or Continuing to Use Benefits 

First-time veteran and dependent students should Apply for Benefits within the Department of Veterans Affairs eBenefits website. Once you have a received your Certificate of Eligibility, please email .

All new and continuing veteran and dependent students intending to use educational benefits must also electronically fill out this Declaration of Intent form every semester when they register for classes.

NOTE: All eligibility (except Chapter 1606) must be processed and verified through the VA. The Military & Veterans Center DOES NOT dictate eligibility.

The Military & Veterans Center is responsible for re-certifying veterans and their dependents each term to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. 

Please electronically send appropriate documentation and materials to the Military & Veterans Center as soon as possible to ensure timely processing and disbursement of benefits.

Military Personnel Benefits

ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY

Active duty military may use VA education benefits and/or tuition assistance to pay for tuition and fees. To use tuition assistance, have the course/s approved through the appropriate military tuition assistance program (GoArmyEd for Army service members; AI Portal for Air Force).

Once the necessary military command signatures and dollar amount for tuition assistance have been obtained, take the “TA Approval Letter/Statement” directly to the Bursar’s Office:

Be sure to also notify the Maryland Veterans Center. Please note that your VA benefits may need to be adjusted if you are receiving TA monies. 

VETERANS, ACTIVE DUTY, RESERVISTS / NATIONAL GUARD MEMBER BENEFITS

Veterans, Active Duty, Reservists / National Guard Members may be eligible for the following (chapters excerpted from the Title 38 U.S. Code): 

  • Chapter 30 (Montgomery G.I. Bill) — Active Duty students may be eligible to receive a monthly payment from the VA to supplement their educational costs.
  • Chapter 31 (vocational rehabilitation) — Eligible students coordinate through their vocational rehabilitation counselor and the Veterans Benefits Office to have tuition, fees, supplies and books paid for by the VA.
  • Chapter 33 (Post 9/11 G.I. Bill) — Eligible students are allocated a certain percentage of their tuition and fees paid for by the VA. A book stipend and basic housing allowance is available when a student is enrolled for the term.
  • Chapter 1606 (Montgomery G.I. Bill: Selected Reserves) — Reservists, Coast Guard and National Guard members may be eligible to receive a monthly payment from the VA to supplement their educational costs. Eligibility is determined through the Department of Defense and Departments of Homeland Security.

DEPENDENT BENEFITS

  • Chapter 33 (Post 9/11 G.I. Bill) — Same as above with two additional offerings:

    Fry Scholarship — Provides benefit eligibility for children of active-duty members who died in the line of duty after September 10, 2001.

    Yellow Ribbon Program — Allows schools to enter into an agreement with VA to fund tuition and Fees cost that exceeds the in-state tuition and fees. Students can receive $1000 per semester.
     
  • Chapter 35 (Dependents’ Educational Assistance) — Educational assistance is paid to dependents of veterans with a service-connected permanent and total disability and died as a result of service connection.
