Class instruction for music education majors that provides early field experience and includes applications of Dalcroze, Orff, and Kodaly methodologies. Prerequisite: department consent.

MUED 211 FOUNDATIONS OF MUSIC EDUCATION (2)

Class instruction for music education majors that provides early field experience and explores historical, philosophical, aesthetic, and pedagogical principles that provide the background and context for music education. Prerequisites: MUED 111 and department consent.

MUED 216 VOCAL PEDAGOGY FOR MUSIC EDUCATORS (2)

This course addresses the anatomical, physiological, and acoustic elements of singing to provide students with a detailed working knowledge of the vocal mechanism, as well as an introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet and understanding of pronunciation through the use of symbols in various languages. Emphasis is placed upon application of these principles to individual and group voice instruction, and provides future music educators with tools and resources to aid teaching in school choral settings. Prerequisite: department consent.

MUED 220 PERCUSSION WORKSHOP (1)

Performance and teaching concepts on all percussion instruments; class type lessons on auxiliary percussion; learning to maintain and repair mallets and instruments; learning to "custom make" beaters, holders, etc.; learning to write for percussion; rehearsing and conducting percussion solo and ensemble literature. Prerequisite: Open only to percussion students. Lab/Class fee will be assessed.

MUED 221 CONDUCTING LAB CHOIR (1)

Conducting Lab Choir provides experience singing and rehearsing literature from a variety of musical style periods, genres, and difficulty levels that is appropriate for elementary and secondary school choirs. Open to music education majors on the vocal-general concentration who are not voice majors. Course meets in conjunction with MUED 327. Prerequisites: MUED 210 and department consent.

MUED 271 SURVEY OF WIND AND PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS (1)

Methods and materials for the instruction of instrumental music in the elementary school for BS MUED vocal-general concentration students. Prerequisite: department consent.

MUED 294 FUNCTIONAL TECHNIQUES II: PIANO AND GUITAR (2)

Organization and administration of marching bands; show design, music programming, field preparation, and rehearsal techniques.

MUED 305 TEACHING MUSIC ELEMENTARY EDUCATION (2)

Methods and materials for teaching music in elementary school presented in a laboratory setting. Elementary education majors only. Prerequisite: consent of department.

MUED 310 INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC IN SPECIAL EDUCATION (3)

Curriculum materials and activities address needs of students with disabilities; development and adaptation of lesson plans and individual education programs are emphasized. Prerequisites: MUED 324, MUSC 221, admission to the Music Teacher Education Program and department consent.

MUED 311 RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT METHODS IN MUSIC EDUCATION (3)

Analysis of and writing about research and assessment methods in music education. Addresses the discourse models and practices important to music education and the techniques of formatting, reporting, validation, and documentation required to write with authority and authenticity within the discipline. Requires grade of C or better to fulfill Core requirement. Core: Advanced Writing Seminar. Prerequisites: ENGL 102 or ENGL 190; MUED 111 and MUED 211; or consent of instructor.

MUED 324 INTEGRATING LITERACY IN THE MUSIC CLASSROOM I (3)

Overview of process and acquisition of literacy, informal strategies for assessing literacy, and the range of instructional strategies and materials for integrating literacy into P-12 music education. Prerequisite: consent of instructor.

MUED 327 TEACHING CHORAL MUSIC FROM THE PODIUM (3)

Group instruction in choral conducting techniques, score study, rehearsal strategies, and choral repertoire for elementary and secondary school choral ensembles. Prerequisites: MUED 194, MUSC 221, and department consent.

MUED 329 TEACHING INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC FROM THE PODIUM (3)

Group instruction in instrumental conducting techniques, score study, rehearsal strategies, and repertoire for elementary and secondary school instrumental ensembles. Prerequisites: MUED 194, MUSC 221, and department consent.

MUED 337 METHODS OF TEACHING ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY CHORAL MUSIC (2)

Methods and materials for the instruction of choral music in elementary and secondary schools. Corequisite: MUED 406. Prerequisite: admission into the Music Teacher Education Program.

MUED 391 STUDENT INTERNSHIP IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MUSIC (6)

Full-time field experience in public school music classrooms under guidance of mentor teachers and university supervisor. Spring Term only. Corequisites: concurrent enrollment in MUED 392 and MUED 401. Prerequisites: ELED 324, MUSC 327 or MUSC 329; successful completion of preceding fall term MUED 306 and MUED 308 (for instrumental majors), or MUED 307, MUED 309 and MUED 337 (for vocal-general majors) and MUED 310). MUED 392 INTERNSHIP IN SECONDARY SCHOOL MUSIC (6)

Full-time field experience in public school music classrooms under guidance of mentor teachers and university supervisor. Spring Term only. Corequisites: concurrent enrollment in MUED 392 and MUED 401. MUED 401 INTEGRATING LITERACY IN THE MUSIC CLASSROOM II (3)

Children's literature, content area reference materials, music performance, and reading/writing strategies combine to integrate literacy into P-12 music education classrooms. Corequisites: MUED 404, MUED 406, MUED 408, or MUED 410. Prerequisites: MUED 324; admission to the Music Teacher Education Program.

MUED 403 METHODS OF TEACHING PREK-8 VOCAL-GENERAL MUSIC (2)

A professional seminar for BS MUED majors. Discussion and sharing of planning and implementation of instructional units; reflection on issues/concerns in current teaching experience; preparation of the Professional Portfolio. Corequisite: MUED 493. Prerequisite: department consent.

Issues, dilemmas, and legalities encountered in defining, creating, distributing, and accessing music with special attention given to digital formats. Prerequisites: sophomore standing and ENGL 102. Core: Ethical Issues & Perspectives.

MUSC 382 RECORDING TECHNIQUES I (3)

A course in recording techniques involving the history, concepts, and mechanics of the recording process. In-class technical labs, tutorials, and hands-on recording sessions will contribute to the development of core technical and aesthetic skills. Supervised research in a selected topic in music culminating in a Thesis/Project for the B.S. in Music degree. Prerequisite: Departmental approval for capstone experience in B.S. in Music.

MUSC 497 INTERNSHIP IN MUSIC INDUSTRY (1-6)

Field experience with working professionals. Prerequisites: consent of Music Internship Coordinator, successful completion (with grade of C or better) of MUSC 305, appropriate courses determined by the Coordinator, junior/senior status, minimum GPA requirement of 2.5 overall and 2.75 in music courses (including classes, ensembles and private lessons).
